Muck Boot Originals Pull On Mid Review

The Pull On Mid is one of the heavier boots we've recently tested, despite its shorter height. The rubber is fairly low profile, however, and the laces give it more style despite being strictly accessory. Overall, we enjoy their convenience when running errands in cold weather.

Performance Comparison

Weather Protection

Due to their shorter shaft height, weather protection isn't as expansive for this boot as the taller competitors. We had to be more thoughtful when splashing or wading through snow to avoid breaching the 9.5-inch flood height. Too, the circumference measures to be approximately 13 inches, which is on the wider side for its height. Reaching just beneath the calves, there's a bit more room for stray droplets and snow to sneak in. The insulation of the neoprene helps in both this category and in regards to warmth, as it creates a thicker barrier between the feet and the cold.

Comfort

The neoprene on the Pull On Mid is soft and has a cushioned feel. The removable insole is also cushioned, which is a nice feature and greatly increases the ability to stand and walk in them throughout the day. However, what detracts from the overall comfort score is the relative stiffness of the shaft in tandem with the shaft height. Because of this particular combination, the front of the shaft hits the shins in an uncomfortable manner. After extended use, our lead tester developed bruises because of this, no matter the sock thickness or whether or not she tucked her pants into the boot to help. Too, because of the weight of the boots, mobility isn't as much of a given. Overall the fit feels a bit larger than what is ideal, creating mild heel lift. These things aside, it wasn't enough to stop us from running errands or even going on walks around the neighborhood.

Traction

The rubber sole doesn't have a very pronounced heel, which offers more stability. The tread design is on the shallow side but still technical enough for most settings. We felt confident with the traction during our tests and didn't encounter any unexpected issues in the snow or when wading through a river. While not the best of the best, the traction is more than adequate.

Warmth

These neoprene booties are rated for subfreezing temperature and have a comfort range (given by the manufacturer) of up to 65 degrees F. We would lower that to about 50-55 degrees, however, especially if there's direct sunlight. Our feet definitely felt warm in them, even while standing in an icy creek — we could barely sense the temperature difference of the water. Walking around town, a general guideline to follow is that if you have to wear long sleeves, then these boots shouldn't get too hot for you. T-shirt temperatures, on the other hand, are a no-go in our opinion.

Style

We appreciate the added accessories on the Pull On Mid, such as the laces and cutouts in the rubber, which lighten up the overall look. The neoprene is waterproof, so the design doesn't compromise the flood height. The laces don't do much, but if you really want to tighten them down, you can. Doing so, however, bunches the neoprene and makes the fit and feel a bit uncomfortable. Overall, we feel fine with activities such as walking around town and going grocery shopping, and the style is versatile enough to feel fun and cute.

Fit

Muck boots come in whole sizes from 5 to 11. Our experience with is that if you're a half-size, it's best to size up. With this particular model, the fit isn't as perfect as others, however, and we did experience some mild heel lift. Not enough to give us blisters right away, but walking more than a few miles at a time could change that. The foot box overall feels a little roomier than other Muck models, which can either be great for thick socks or a little baggy feeling otherwise.

Value

Despite the heaviness and mild heel lift, this boot feels well made and durable. The price is a little steep in our opinion for what you're getting, but they are still a fair enough value for their casual convenience.

Conclusion

As long as you get the sizing right, we feel the overall weather protection, comfort, style, and traction of the Muck Pull on Mid are of average or above-average quality. Warmth is where this pair truly shines, which makes them a reliable choice for colder environments.
