How We Tested Camping Coffees
After narrowing the market offerings to a select group of top contenders, we went about caffeinating ourselves heavily in an attempt to decide which one works best for the gourmet camper. We performed several head-to-head blind taste tests with self-professed coffee lovers and noted their preferences.
To ensure that the coffee itself was not an issue with tasting, we selected top quality beans and grinds from roasters who know their stuff. For the first taste test we used Black Velvet in Mammoth Lakes, CA and for the subsequents tests we used Deeper Roots Coffee based in Cincinnati, OH. Starting with high quality, flavorful beans meant that we could evaluate the subtle differences in taste based on the brew methods.
Then we took each one along with us on camping trips. From car camping to backpacking, we tried each one in different situations to see which ones were the most useful when waking up in the great outdoors. We lent them out to people planning trips and wanted a convenient way to make a morning brew, and noted their observations.
While we tried some of the popular percolators, we ultimately excluded them for their bulk, hassle and inconsistent flavor results.
After getting completely spun out on way too many cups of coffee, we compiled all of our research to present you with a detailed comparison.
