Our Verdict

We like the Brooks Ghost 14 for its supportive design that balances cushioning and stability nicely. More rigidity through the heel leaves the shoe feeling sure-footed and stable compared to many of today's soft and squishy foams. Moderate cushioning leads to a responsive feel that is great for uptempo efforts. This model focuses on a blend of cushioning and stability and comes in a lighter package which we enjoyed. Brooks does a good job of providing for runners who desires more rigidity in a shoe without it feeling overbuilt or sluggish. Durability should not be a concern given the substantial rubber outsole and heavier materials throughout the upper.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Compared to our test lineup of top-notch running shoes, the Ghost 14 provides the great stability and support that Brooks is known for in a reasonably lightweight design. This shoe has a 12-millimeter heel-to-toe drop, which we think is a bit high given that it weighs under 10 ounces (men's size 9.5). There is good cushioning and responsiveness that has a firm and planted feel. We are impressed with the rigidity and durability of this model without the shoe feeling overbuilt or sluggish.

Cushioning and Landing Comfort

This seems to have been a priority when developing the Ghost, with its moderate cushioning that feels stable and supportive. Also, being a tad lighter than some of the supportive models we've tested produces an energetic feel that makes you lighter on your feet. While there isn't a ton of compression, this is suitable for maintaining a supportive design which is great for longer runs and some shorter efforts. We find that the 12mm produces a comfortable footstrike keeping less stress through the lower leg but can reduce the ground feel and dull responsiveness when toeing off.

Responsiveness

This model has a more traditional, less compressive higher density foam that we generally prefer for a more stable design. There is minimal compaction under load, but the shoe has a nice springy feel during impact and take-off. Power transfer felt sufficient, but we wouldn't mind a bit less drop to really engage all of the muscles in our lower legs. The shoe continues its responsive feel by coming in at under 10 ounces, which allows for smooth turnover and easier running. We found similar responsiveness to the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 21, though some may find the Ghost 14 is a bit snappier and responsive due to the drop in weight.

Upper Comfort

The upper material feels durable and comfortable, providing good heel comfort and nice arch support. This shoe features a standard padded tongue design with a separate seamless upper. Brooks uses thicker upper fabrics than some other modern shoes, which we appreciate for their durability, but this leads to less breathability and longer drying times in wet conditions. We found the fit of the Ghost 14 to have a more comfortable toe-box compared to the older Ghost 13.

Lateral Stability and Support

This shoe excels by providing excellent overall support and stability, which Brooks is known for. The upper provides high amounts of rigidity through the heel, which helps make your lower legs and knees feel planted. The upper has nice arch support, which helps provide good lateral stability through the midfoot. A 12-millimeter heel-to-toe drop helps maintain a cushioned, well-supportive feel that eases tension on your Achilles and lower legs. This is a model we would feel comfortable taking on natural surfaces and more uneven terrain. Those looking for a lighter-weight trainer but often do not find the support they need in today's ultralight offerings should consider this model.

Weight

With the durability of this model and the supportive design, which has moderate amounts of cushioning, we were impressed with its weight. Coming in at 10.10 ounces in a men's size 9.5, there are many heavier models without the durability and stability that you find in the Ghost. We think this is a good weight for those looking for a quicker model without sacrificing some of the durability and supportive benefits of a heavier shoe.

Should You Buy the Brooks Ghost 14?

The Brooks Ghost 14 would be great for those looking for supportive features but also want to lower the shoe weight to move faster and feel more responsive turnover. If you're looking to transition from a heavier model but don't want to lose some of the benefits, then check out this model. We think it's a great middle-ground between ultralight trainers and heavier, more rigid models. The durable upper and outsole should provide you with plenty of miles, which we always love to see.

What Other Running Shoes Should You Consider?

Depending on your running goals, if stability holds the greatest importance to you, we suggest checking out the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23. This contender is supportive and stable (slightly better than the Ghost) with a great upper and durable outsole.
