Our Analysis

The Smartwool PhD Outdoor Ultra Light Micro Socks are a well balanced mix of 54% Merino Wool, 42% Nylon and 4% Elastane. A blend of fabrics and fabric thicknesses makes for a highly versatile three season sock. The PhD's work well in most climates except freezing cold. They all stretch well with a form fitting feel and a functional mix of stretchy fabric in the arch and more durable and cushioning fabric on the heel and toe areas. Our tests included trail running, hiking, climbing, bouldering, biking, trail work and general around the town use and the socks performed great across the board. A few other top socks we tested performed higher at individual tasks but no sock compared all around to the Smartwool PhD. Our testers all agree that if you were to have only one three season sock, one of the versions of the Smartwool PhD should be it.
