Looking for warmth? The Patagonia Hyper Puff Hoody delivers with 100-grams of HyperDAS insulation. The former Patagonia DAS Parka was a piece of outdoor gear beloved by many. Its durability, warmth, and cozy factor was through the roof, making it an excellent option for winter wear or cold, icy belays. The Hyper Puff exemplifies all the features that many love: warmth, coziness, and comfort! While this jacket isn't as bulky as its predecessor, it is undoubtedly warm! In our testing period, we determined that this is one of the toastiest jackets tested. It offers superior weather resistance and comfort in the form of its mobile and flattering face fabric design. Patagonia also offers many cute colors to have you looking great all winter long.

While this jacket is warm, it isn't light. Warmth is typically a trade-off for compressibility and weight, and this is no exception. While it does have its stuff sack and compresses to a surprisingly small size for its bulk, it is the weightiest jacket in this review. The Arc'teryx Proton AR Hoody, is an excellent warm and compressive alternative. This jacket is a little more breathable, making it better for winter sports where you might sweat.

While this jacket once held a Top Pick for warmth, it's has been beaten out by the Black Diamond stance, offering more insulation and protection from the elements. While the Stance isn't as cute or breathable as the Hyper Puff, it is warmer. That said if you seek a warm, breathable, and more stylish winter jacket, the Hyper Puff Hoody maybe just what you are looking for. If you need a jacket that offers a comfortable and warm experience, the Hyper Puff Hoody is a top recommendation. Wear it on the coldest days of winter or layer it with another jacket for superior comfort when it gets cold outside.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Warmth

If you seek warmth, the Hyper Puff Hoody is a great option. As a former Top Pick, this heavy-weight jacket offers 100-grams of HyperDAS insulation that will keep you warm through the coldest days of winter. While the shell is a touch breathable, it locks in warmth with several features like pull-cords around the hem and hood, elastic cuffs, and a collar that rises over the nose. Suited best for wear around town or as a belay jacket at an icy belay, we recommend this coat for the winter season. The hydrophobic properties of this coat, like all coats in this review, maintains its warmth when wet and is a great option for those that get cold easily.

The ample insulation in addition to its warmth features makes it an excellent option for ice climbing, or even cross-country skiing on the coldest days. The Hyper Puff provides excellent warmth, making it a fantastic jacket for wearing around and hunkering down in when the wind blows hard.

Weight & Compression

While this jacket is super warm, it's not super compressible or lightweight. As a heavy-weight jacket option, it is quite the opposite. That said, it can be stowed away in a backpack, using its compression sack. If you seek a jacket that is lightweight and stows away easily, there are many other better options out there.

Weather Resistance

While standing in the shower, rain, and snow, this jacket proves to be highly water resistant. We are impressed with the 1.1 oz 100% Nylon stretch ripstop Pertex Quantum shell that offers a DWR water resistant layer. In our shower tests, this jacket repelled the water for about one minute before the external layer of the face fabric became wet.

A little look at the water resistance of this jacket during our at-home water resistance tests! We found the face fabric to be resistant to water, but not impervious to it.

After that, we stood in the shower for roughly ten minutes and didn't get wet where the fabric was the thickest. The only moisture that got through was at the zipper of the jacket - but it was little to none for the amount of water we poured on it. Overall, we are impressed with the water resistance this jacket has to offer. When it comes to wind, it's so thick that it slices through the wind, keeping you warm and comfortable. It indeed performs in snow (wet or dry) and kept us dry in little rain storms.

Comfort & Coziness

Ready to wrap yourself like a burrito this winter? The form-fitting nature of this jacket provides mobility while the thick insulation is packed into little spaces that hugs you all around. The slippery interior fabrics make it easy to wear over the top of other layers, while its features make it easy to wear with a helmet or overtop of a harness. It also features four pockets; two hand-warmer pockets that are large enough to store a small sandwich, one exterior chest pocket, and one internal mesh pocket. The internal pocket is so large you can put a pair of climbing ski skins inside! This is one heck of a cozy and comfortable coat.

The Hyper Puff features elastic cuffs that protect on cold days, and easily with the body. The thick fabrics wrap around the body in a way that isn't mimicked by any other jacket in this review. Thanks to its added weight, the bulkier feel offers more comfort than a lightweight jacket.

Breathability

This jacket provides a little bit of ventilation, but not much. On a ski tour, we decided to test the breathability of the fabric. After hiking uphill for about four minutes, we found ourselves sweating, unzipping the jacket, and ultimately pulling it off.

While this jacket is somewhat breathable, it features many layers that makes it a little less breathable than others in this review.

While it's not suited for super aerobic activities, the fabric breathes. However, breathability is hindered by the many layers of insulation and fabric jacket. Simply put, if breathable is your top concern, this is not a great option. Fortunately, it breathes and vents enough to let off a little steam if you happen to build a snowman or engage in an unexpected wrestling match in the snow!

Style & Fit

While this jacket isn't the most "stylish" it certainly has a decent fit. Many of our testers appreciated the flattering chevron stitching patterns that accentuate the feminine curvature; the fit is also longer, accommodating both the short and tall-bodied women that tested this jacket. Many of our curvaceous testers also appreciated that the fabric doesn't hug the body too much, providing a clean look for all shapes and sizes. While the Patagonia Hyper Puff does a great job in style for the amount of bulk it offers, it still makes you look a little puffier than other jackets in this review.

Best Application

As a cute and warm insulated jacket, it is perfect for low-key winter activities (such as a hike or walk around town) or as a belay jacket at an icy belay. Wear it during the coldest days of winter as your most outer jacket. Other coats layer easily underneath, allowing you to add a little more versatility for superior warmth. Thanks to its incredible weather protection, the Patagonia Hyper Puff is awesome for wearing out in any winter storm. Plus, it comes in some super cute colors.

Value

This jacket sustains an excellent value. For a retail price of $299 (with several amazing online deals), the Hyper Puff features an iron-clad guarantee that is backed by Patagonia. If you have any zipper or durability issues, they will either repair it or provide you with great service. During our testing period, we didn't observe any wear and tear issues, even after hiking and skiing through the woods. As a result, we'd say the jacket is worth the money.

Conclusion

If you seek a warm winter jacket, the Hyper Puff Patagonia Hoody is one of our recommendations. Wear it during the coldest winter days. Just avoid it for super aerobic activities or the warmer seasons.
