Our Verdict

The smaller a hammock is, the less it weighs — and the more difficult it becomes to achieve a comfortable hang. As slightly longer than the average single hammock (10' 6" long and 5' wide), the Grand Trunk Single offers more space than other singles on the market. In fact, it is over a foot longer than the Eagles Nest Outfitters SingleNest. This is about as small a hammock as we would recommend camping in regularly, and taller people can still camp in this hammock. This Hammock is an excellent blend of light weight materials and a narrow build with enough space for an average user to feel at home.

Those looking for more space might enjoy the ENO DoubleNest or the Grand Trunk Double.

Our Analysis and Test Results

The parachute nylon Grand Trunk Single does everything well, but nothing particularly stands out. We love this small and comfortable option for an all-around hammock. It sleeps fairly well, though we prefer the extra space of the Grand Trunk Double for multiple nights in a row.

Comfort

Often a hammock is more comfortable simply if it is larger. The Grand Trunk Single is a perfect single for camping since it has at least a foot more length than most other singles. It sleeps the best of all single parachute nylon hammocks that we tested and was our favorite to camp in. It can even fit a couple sitting up with ease.

Weight

As the most comfortable single to sleep in, the Grand Trunk Single also weighs in as one of the heaviest in this category. At 16 oz, and around 7" long when packed, this hammock is not the best fit for a lightweight travel set-up. It comes equipped with steel carabiners and cord, added weight that might prove invaluable if the hammock needs to be bought on-the-run because it can be set up right out of the box without needing to purchase additional accessories. Those shaving grams off of their pack may be interested in one of the lightest hammocks we tested, the Grand Trunk Nano 7 or Eagles Nest Outfitters Pronest.

Versatility

Most hammock users break their gear out anywhere and everywhere, and in that sense most hammock users will come to appreciate the Grand Trunk Single. Its durable construction is great for kids, and the breathable nylon is a great companion on long trips or for travelling. While most hammocks will need a few upgrades before being truly expedition ready, the Grand Trunk Single was sufficient while testing in the deserts and other dry, bug-free environments. For a fully equipped and burly hammock for camping, try the Hennessy Expedition Asym, which comes complete with a bug net and a rain fly.

Protection/Durability

Gear should never fail in the back country, and through extensive testing we were quite pleased with the durability of the Grand Trunk Single. Slight abrasion from rocks and brush did little to the durable nylon material, and the slight stretch helped to keep tears from forming. Before extended trips, a reliable forecast would need to be ascertained, and lacking a bug net makes this hammock not ideal for areas with excessive insects.

Ease of Set-Up

Carabiners and cord come with this hammock, so it is ready to go straight out of the package. No need to order those accessories separately. The thin cord is ideal for hanging from boulders or extending an anchor. For wrapping trees, though, get some thicker, after-market webbing straps to avoid damaging the bark. To further reduce damage, wrap the cord several times around the tree. With some diligence, damage to trees can be easily avoided.

Best Applications

This model will suit any user who wants a comfortable and durable hammock for occasional camping trips and possibly regular lounge use.

Value

The Grand Trunk Single is fairly inexpensive. It is incredibly versatile and durable. It came as a close runner-up to the Grand Trunk Ultralight Starter.

Conclusion

The Grand Trunk Single is all about value and versatility. The extra length fits tall people well and the inclusion of a few carabiners and some cord allows it to be set up without needing extra gear. It is not the most comfortable camping hammock, yet it is one of the most comfortable single hammocks. Most will find it adequate for a long nap or an overnight trip.
