The Peak Oyl Mtn Women's takes traditional self-inflating foam pad design to the next level with its air core rails. These help shave weight and keep you in place at night. The pad has 1.5" of soft, diamond die-cut foam that keeps you comfy and warm even when the temps drop below freezing. Unfortunately, the Peak Oyl Mtn is neither the lightest nor most packable pad in its class. The pad weighs a hefty 24 ounces. Though slightly less comfortable and less warm, the Therm-a-Rest ProLite - Women's is our favorite self-inflating foam sleeping pad because it's reasonably comfortable and weighs only 16 ounces.

Other construction types offer more performance. The Nemo Astro Insulated is our top rated all-purpose pad and offer the best value for those who want one pad for both backpacking and car camping. If saving weight is your top priority go for either the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite - Women's (11oz) or Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm (warmer, more durable, and 15 oz). These latter two options are better for multi-day trips than the Peak Oyl Mtn.

Our Analysis and Test Results

The Pacific Outdoor Equipment Peak Oyl Mtn Women's adds a creative twist to traditional inflatable foam sleeping pad design: air core rails line the pad's edges and help to keep you in place at night. As they have no foam inside, they also help to save weight. This is the only sleeping pad we tested that employs this design. Our testers like it because it helps keep you on the pad — your feet and legs feel the rails and avoid flopping over them onto the cold ground below. This feature makes the Peak Oyl Mtn the best pad for people who roll about a lot at night.

The Peak Oyl Mtn is a true three-season pad. It's warm enough for late spring and early fall snowstorms and camping at higher elevations during the summer. The women's version is slightly warmer than the traditional version. The pad has another nice feature: anti-slip grips, which help to keep your sleeping bag in place.

The Peak Oyl Mtn is the only sleeping pad we've tested that's bluesign certified. This means that the pad's materials adhere to rigorous social and environmental standards. (The pad uses a 40 percent bio based).

Dislikes

The main drawback to the Peak Oly Mtn is its weight, a hefty 24 ounces. Three of the four other self-inflating foam pads tested in this category are lighter than the Peak Oyl Mtn. The ProLite Plus, for example, is as warm as the Peak Oyl Mtn, but also two ounces lighter. Although the pad uses diamond die cut foam (to save weight), a more advanced foam could help reduce weight and packed size further (see the Nemo Zor's foam).

Value

Though slightly more expensive, the Therm-a-Rest ProLite Plus is equally warm, but lighter and more compact.
