Our Analysis

The Parinaco is an ultra techy and ultra heavy waterproof breathable snowsport shell. This uses Schoeller FTC c-change fabric, which widens its pores as the temperature increases (and you sweat more). The Parinaco comes equipped with the full descent feature set: big pit zips, crossover chest pockets, interior storage and a helmet-compatible hood.

Unfortunately the jacket is so heavy (33 oz) it feels like you're wearing a coat of armor. Most other hardshells clock in at around 20 ounces. Being so heavy and bulky, it's hard to imagine using the Parinaco for backcountry skiing or any multi-day trip. It weighs one ounce less than the Terra Nova Solar Photon tent! As for the super fancy waterproof breathable technology - our testers were unable notice a difference between the breathability of c-change and other leading technologies, such as Gore-Tex Pro shell. At $550 this is also extremely expensive. Though we haven't tested a comprehensive suite of descent hardshells we believe that slightly more expensive shells, such as the Arc'teryx Sidewinder SV likely offer more performance for your dollar.

The Mammut Parinaco has been discontinued.
