Our Verdict

The OMM Mountain Raid 40 is an ultralight 14 oz synthetic sleeping bag for adventure racing, travel, emergency use, and times when you need lightweight warm-when-wet insulation. The bag uses 60g/m Primaloft ONE on top and 40g/m on the bottom, and Pertex Quantum shell fabric; it's basically a very high quality lightweight synthetic jacket for your entire body. This is our favorite emergency use sleeping bag because it packs very small, weighs little, and works well even if it's wet out-- like an emergency bivy sack but arguably more effective. The bag is available for purchase from select UK outdoor stores and online retailers.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Weight

This is the lightest synthetic sleeping bag we've tested. It weighs a mere 13.9 ounces on our scale and compresses as small as many lightweight synthetic insulated jackets. Many people have said, "this is a sleeping bag!"

Warmth

The Mountain Raid is an ultralight bag for adventure racing, international travel, ultralight backpacking, and emergency use. It is suitable for warmer temperature nights, such as those in the 40's and 50's. A minimalist hood helps to trap heat around your head. The base of the bag is filled with 40g of Primaloft ONE and the top and foot box have 60g Primaloft ONE.

Comfort

The bag is intended to maximize thermal efficiency and weight savings through a trim cut. It is 81" long, 25.6" wide at the shoulder, and 14" wide at the foot. It is not an ultra comfortable bag, but rather the slimmest possible bag that will fit a variety of body types. If you are around or over 6' tall the hood does not close fully over your head-- we suggest wearing a lightweight hooded jacket or fleece, which you probably would do anyway.

Features

The zipper is long enough to let you inside, but not any longer. That's the bag's only feature.

Versatility

This is a highly specialized bag. It is versatile in that you can use it for a variety of lightweight applications, as mentioned above, but generally warmer bags are more versatile becuase they can be used for a wider range of activities in a wider range of temperatures.

Value

The Mountain Raid can be found for around $200, which is a reasonably good price considering it uses top quality materials. Other synthetic bags offer much more warmth for the same or lower price, but weigh much more.

How To Get It

See OMM's website and search online to find a place that carries the bag. We don't know of any major US retailers that sell it.
